HC Deb 28 July 1952 vol 504 cc1079-80
24. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Minister of Food what are his immediate plans, in conjunction with the Minister of Transport, for increasing transport facilities from Canada and the West Indies to Scotland of fresh fruit in refrigeration ships.

Dr. Hill

My right hon. and gallant Friend is not aware that existing transport facilities are inadequate for this trade, but if the hon. and learned Member has information to the contrary perhaps he will let me know.

Mr. Hughes

If the Minister is satisfied that the existing transport facilities are sufficient, will he tell the House how many refrigeration ships are available for this purpose? Is he aware that the need for fresh fruit of this kind is urgent?

Dr. Hill

No fruit is now being imported from Canada. The main import from the West Indies is bananas, for which there is ample shipping space.

Mr. Hughes

Why is no fresh fruit being imported from Canada?

Dr. Hill

The hon. and learned Gentleman will recall the balance of payments problem.

25. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Minister of Food what are his immediate plans for increasing the supplies of fresh fruit from Canada and the West Indies to Scotland.

Dr. Hill

I am not clear what the hon. and learned Member has in mind. Scotland already gets its share of bananas and Scottish traders no doubt ensure that Scotland gets its share of other imported fruits irrespective of the port of arrival.

Mr. Hughes

Will the Minister allow me to thank him for that careful, diligent and exhaustive answer?
