HC Deb 24 July 1952 vol 504 cc747-8
35. Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in what circumstances permission to marry is granted to prisoners before expiry of sentence.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

The temporary release of a prisoner under escort for the purpose of marriage is authorised only when marriage before the prisoner's discharge would prevent his or her child from being born illegitimate.

Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

Does that answer mean that in no other circumstances is a prisoner given permission to marry? If so, will the Home Secretary consider extension of the facility in suitable cases where marriage, for a variety of reasons, ought to take place?

Sir. D. Maxwell Fyfe

That is a very difficult point and would require very serious consideration before I could go forward. There has been great controversy about the step I have taken, but I believe it is the kindest one and I stand by it.
