HC Deb 21 July 1952 vol 504 c28
43. Mr. M. Lindsay

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will now consider making the flashing type of indicator optional to the semaphore type, in order to help motor car manufacturers reduce the cost of export models.

Mr. Braithwaite

My right hon. Friend has received representations about difficulties caused to the export trade by the present ban on flashing indicators and he is looking into the question. The safety aspect requires careful consideration.

Mr. Lindsay

Is my hon. Friend aware that there is no objection to these indicators, provided they are placed on all four corners of the vehicle so that they can be seen by the driver of an overtaking car? Is he also aware that it would be of tremendous assistance to car manufacturers if they could place them on British models, because they are in general use overseas?

Mr. Braithwaite

Yes, Sir, but there are a number of other objections, including the possibility of confusion with other lights and the likelihood of them being invisible to drivers alongside and in other relative positions.
