§ Sir T. DugdaleThe Battle of Maldon took place in 991 A.D. in the time of Ethelred, and it was fought between the Earl of East Anglia, whose name was Brithnoth, and the Danes, who were led 2330 by Anlaf. The Danes were victorious on that occasion, and Brithnoth was killed.
§ Mr. Emrys HughesIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that, while it may be necessary to give information about what happened at Maldon, there is no need to give information about what happened at Bannockburn?
§ Mr. J. HudsonCan the right hon. Gentleman say what they fought each other for?
§ Sir T. DugdaleI cannot furnish that information.
§ 36. Mr. Dribergasked the Minister of Agriculture whether it is proposed to show the sites of the Anglo-Saxon fortresses or burhs at Maldon and at Witham, Essex, in the forthcoming edition of the Ordnance Survey; and how far the researches and views of Mr. F. H. Laws, of Maldon, on the siting of the Maldon burh, which have been made available to the Survey, have been taken into account.
§ Sir T. DugdaleThe sites of the burhs will be shown on Ordnance Survey maps as soon as satisfactory proof of their position can be obtained. Mr. Laws has done valuable research work into the location of the burhs, and full account has been taken of his very interesting views; but the location of the burhs has not yet been proved to the satisfaction of the Archaeology Officer of the Ordnance Survey or of other archaeology authorities in this country.
