HC Deb 17 July 1952 vol 503 c2319
27. Mr. Shepherd

asked the Secretary to the Treasury if he is aware of the inconvenience caused by the Civil Service Commission in withholding their telephone number from the directory; and whether, in view of the fact that no other Government Department withholds its number from the directory, he will give instructions to the Civil Service Commission to come into line.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The Civil Service Commissioners have arranged for their telephone number to be given in the next edition of the London telephone directory.

Mr. Shepherd

Will my hon. Friend bear in mind that this sort of action is most unsatisfactory on the part of the Department, and that for many years the Department has persisted in this policy, causing great inconvenience to the public?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I hope my hon. Friend is not suggesting that the entry of the telephone number is unsatisfactory. It is designed to be of convenience to the public.
