40. Mr. Russell

asked the Minister of Transport if he will have the traffic lights in Oxford Street regulated in such a way that they do not cause columns of traffic to be stopped across intersecting streets resulting in confusion and delay.

These faults arise from the old type of equipment at present working in Oxford Street. The highway authority is preparing a scheme of replacement, which my right hon. Friend hopes to approve for completion next year. When new signals are installed, these faults should be rectified.
