HC Deb 10 July 1952 vol 503 cc1509-10
40. Miss Ward

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the estimated gross cost to the Treasury of the Income Tax reliefs in respect of National Insurance contributions.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

With the new rates of contributions it is estimated that the cost of the Income Tax relief in respect of National Insurance contributions (other than employer's contributions) will be £34 million in a full year.

Miss Ward

In view of the fact that so many people get their insurance benefits at reduced rates, will my hon. Friend consult the Minister of National Insurance to see that those who cannot have these benefits at reduced rates have something done for them, and thus end the monstrous discrimination against the poor which was imposed by the Socialist Government under their Act?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

That is another, though no doubt important, question.

Miss Ward

Will my hon. Friend consult the Minister of National Insurance; otherwise, I shall have to give notice of raising it on the Adjournment?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I do not require a threat from my hon. Friend to say that I am always delighted to discuss anything with my right hon. Friend.
