HC Deb 10 July 1952 vol 503 c1512
52. Colonel J. H. Harrison

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many applications during 1951 were made by British salesmen for extra currency overseas; and to how much this amounted.

Sir A. Salter

No statistics of applications made are available; but about 87,500 applications for currency for business purposes were granted, totalling over £9 million.

Colonel Harrison

Does not my right hon. Friend think that this is a very small percentage of our export sales? Would he do everything possible to encourage a greater number of salesmen to go abroad and offer our goods all over the world, as we depend so much on the export trade?

Sir A. Salter

I think that reasonable arrangements are already made, and I do not know that business abroad is, in fact, being restricted in the way my hon. and gallant Friend suggests.
