HC Deb 10 July 1952 vol 503 cc1516-7
46. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Prime Minister if he can state the approximate date on which the first British atomic bomb will be exploded.

The Prime Minister

No, Sir.

Sir W. Smithers

When the day is fixed, will the Prime Minister arrange for a number of fellow travellers, including Members of this House and of the Church, to be on the site? If he likes, I will send him a preliminary list.

The Prime Minister

I am well aware of the widespread interest that is taken in what I may call the utilitarian employment of nuclear energy, but I think it would have to be administered on a bi-partisan basis.

Mr. Isaacs

In that event, would we not run the risk of being blown into "Smithereens"?

The Prime Minister

Every step will be taken to provide against unnecessary loss of life.
