HC Deb 01 July 1952 vol 503 c217
10. Mr. Hollis

asked the Minister of Works whether he is now in a position to make a statement about the Anti-Slavery Memorial in Parliament Square.

Mr. Eccles

Yes, Sir. Since 19th May last a model has been on view on the proposed site at the north east corner of St. Margaret's Churchyard, and I shall be glad to receive any expressions of opinion either from Members of this or the other House, or from members of the public, as to the suitability of the site and the tablet. I propose to reserve a site in the Victoria Tower Gardens for the re-erection of the Buxton Fountain which formerly stood in Parliament Square, but it will be necessary for me to obtain the consent of Parliament for the use of this site_ Mr. Hollis: Can my right hon. Friend make three things clear? First, is it proposed that the railings will remain in front of this memorial? Secondly, has the Rector of St. Margaret's, Westminster, been consulted and has he given his consent? Thirdly, will there be a charge on public funds?

Mr. Eccles

We have not quite decided about the railings, but I think they will be in front of the memorial. The Rector of St. Margaret's has approved the scheme. The Anti-Slavery and Aborigines Protection Society have agreed to provide up to £1,000 towards the cost, and my architects tell me that the cost will be within that figure.

Mr. Stokes

Will the right hon. Gentleman make it clear that all these arrangements were made before the present Government came into power?

Mr. Eccles

I did not notice the mockup there before, but I certainly agree that the whole idea originated with the last Government.

Mr. Stokes

I only mean that we on this side of the House approve.
