HC Deb 31 January 1952 vol 495 cc349-50
28. Mr. F. J. Erroll

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps he is taking to ensure that pedestrians who cause road accidents in the Metropolitan area are brought before the courts with the same thoroughness as motorists.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

Apart from the offence of loitering on a pedestrian crossing the actions of pedestrians are not subject to legal sanctions such as apply to motorists. I understand from the Commissioner of Police that incidents necessitating prosecution are rare in the Metropolitan Police district, and that police action consists almost exclusively of giving verbal warning or advice. Nevertheless, I would appeal to all road users to show a spirit of give and take and avoid inconsiderate or selfish actions likely to cause accidents.
