asked the Minister of Food (1) if he is aware that mixed fruit, chiefly sultanas and currants mixed with sugar, is being sold in the Newcastle district in a dirty condition, and that after the sugar is separated only 1lb. 2 oz. is left from a 21b. packet; and if he will have this mixed fruit examined and tested for cleanliness;

(2) if he is aware that a sample 2 lb. of the mixed fruit, which is being sold in the Newcastle district for 4s., contains 9 oz. sultanas, costing 9d., currants 9 oz., costing 6¼d., 14 oz. sugar, costing 5¼d., total cost, 1s. 9d.; and if he will investigate, with a view to controlling the price of this mixed product.

As foreshadowed in the reply I gave to the hon. Member for Dartford (Mr. Dodds) on 12th November, 1951, the purchase and sale of these imported dry mixtures of dried fruit, sugar and fat, has been prohibited, with effect from 9th December, 1951, except for sale to manufacturers for processing into genuine mincemeat.
