HC Deb 17 December 1952 vol 509 cc1392-3
47. Mr. Wyatt

asked the Prime Minister whether he will make a statement on his discussions with the Prime Ministers of Australia and New Zealand about defence in the Pacific and South-East Asia, with particular reference to the proposal for a joint approach to the United States of America.

The Prime Minister

No, Sir. I do not wish to add anything to the statement which was issued to the Press on 15th December.

Mr. Wyatt

Can the Prime Minister say whether this means that any approach to the United States Government now from this country has to wait until the new Administration is in office? Can he say what objections there have been from the American side so far to our taking part in the defence talks in the Pacific?

The Prime Minister

I think the hon. Member's supplementary question suggests some of the difficulties which I should have to encounter in making a full reply to him.

Mr. Wyatt

Can the Prime Minister say what objections there have been from the American side so far to our taking part in the discussions?

The Prime Minister

I have already said that I do not wish to add anything to the statement which I made. I have nothing to add to that.

Mr. Wyatt

Is it not rather discourteous not to tell the House this?
