HC Deb 11 December 1952 vol 509 c656
17. Mr. Braine

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps are being taken to increase the establishment of the Essex County Constabulary.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

I have approved a proposal submitted to me by the Essex Standing Joint Committee earlier this month that the establishment of the county police force should be increased by three inspectors, three sergeants and fifty constables. I understand that the chief constable is engaged on a comprehensive review of the establishment, and that he has it in mind to submit further proposals to the standing joint committee early next year.

Mr. Braine

Is my hon. and learned Friend aware that his answer will give very great satisfaction to people who have been worried about the incidence of crime in the area, and can he say whether the new proposals likely to be made will take into account the very considerable increase in population which has taken place?

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

Yes, it is: that is one of the problems which a chief constable must bear in mind.
