HC Deb 08 December 1952 vol 509 c2
1. Mr. T. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to what extent the grant of £800,000 by Her Majesty's Government to the Burmah Oil Company has resulted in rehabilitation of the company's works and in the production of oil.

The Joint Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Anthony Nutting)

The Burmah Oil Company's field at Chauk has been rehabilitated, and I understand that production of crude oil is now in the region of 100,000 tons a year. This rehabilitation was not, however, paid for out of the grant by His late Majesty's Government, which was given to assist the Government of Burma to maintain employment, and took the form of compensation for losses sustained as a result of insurgent activities.
