HC Deb 02 December 1952 vol 508 c1269
26. Mr. Fernyhough

asked the Secretary of State for War if he will arrange for Army transport to meet at the station nearest to the camp Army personnel returning from leave in order to convey them to their quarters.

Mr. Head

Regulations provide that, if there is no suitable public transport, Army vehicles may be used for this purpose.

Mr. Fernyhough

If the regulations provide that Army vehicles may be used, in that case, may I ask the Minister to see that they are used? Is he aware that many of these camps are situated five or six miles from a station, and that the men have to undergo distressing conditions in order to reach the camp on a wet night on returning from leave, carrying their kitbags, and that the only alternative involves having to pay 15s. or £1 for a taxi?

Mr. Head

I am in sympathy with the hon. Gentleman. We do try to arrange these affairs, and a great deal of trouble has been taken throughout the country. If the hon. Gentleman will let me know of any particular area which he has in mind, I will look into the matter.
