HC Deb 07 April 1952 vol 498 c2268
24. Mr. J. A. Sparks

asked the Minister of Food which foods and feedingstuffs he intends to release from bulk purchase to private buying in the current year.

Major Lloyd George

In so far as it becomes possible to discontinue bulk purchases of any particular commodity a decision will be announced at the appropriate time.

Mr. Sparks

Does not that answer really mean that the right hon. and gallant Gentleman agrees that bulk purchase makes a most important contribution to holding down prices and the cost of living, and that his continuance of that policy clearly indicates it?

Mr. Shinwell

Is not the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that his answer must be very disappointing to the Members of his own party? When will he wake up about this and do what he promised to do?

Major Lloyd George

I had the feeling that my answer was more disappointing to hon. Gentlemen opposite than it was to hon. Gentlemen on this side of the House.
