HC Deb 21 November 1951 vol 494 c363
2. Mr. Peter Remnant

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General what pensions are received by sub-postmasters; and what is the basis of arriving at that pension.

Mr. Gammans

Sub-postmasters are not eligible for pensions under the Superannuation Acts, but they can qualify for gratuities under certain conditions laid down in the Act of 1949.

Mr. Remnant

Does the Minister realise that despite the recent increase in salary these sub-postmasters rank among the worst paid officials in the country? When economic conditions improve, will he look favourably on some improvement either in their salary or in their pension?

Mr. Gammans

I suggest that the hon. Member should look at the Regulations under which sub-postmasters can get gratuities. They are somewhat complicated, but I will send him a copy if he cares to read them.
