HC Deb 20 November 1951 vol 494 cc191-2
6. Mr. George Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that 22430174 Private P. J. Bannister, now on his way to Asia, has been excused all marching and parades, due to the bad condition of his feet; that he was receiving medical attention for three weeks prior to his embarkation; and whether he will give consideration to the recall of this soldier for home service.

Mr. Head

No, Sir. Before embarkation this soldier attended for treatment of a minor complaint, but otherwise carried out normal duties. I know of no reason why he should be recalled from overseas.

Mr. Thomas

Is the Minister aware that, according to the information available to me, this lad has inside his pay book a special note to the effect that he is excused all marching, drill and picket duty owing to the condition of his feet, and would the right hon. Gentleman be good enough to look at the matter again to see if my facts are correct?

Mr. Head

I have already looked into the matter. In actual fact this soldier was suffering from athlete's foot, which is a short-term disease and one which is not incurable. At the time he embarked he was under close arrest, and I am satisfied that, on the whole, there is every justification for his being passed fit.
