§ 52. Mr. E. Fernyhoughasked the Prime Minister if, in view of the need to increase manpower in the coal industry and the need for an increase in coal production, he will release from the Forces all men with mining experience who are prepared, upon their release, to enter the coal industry.
§ The Prime MinisterThe Armed Forces have already done, much to help the mining industry, for example, by releasing nearly 3,000 Regulars who undertook to return to the pits, by discouraging miners from volunteering as Regulars, and by stopping Service recruiting activities in predominantly mining areas. These measures have been a very useful help to the mining industry though naturally at a serious cost to the Armed Forces. In view of the need to increase the production of coal the possibility of a further contribution by the Services is being examined.
§ Mr. FernyhoughDoes the Prime Minister realise that many on this side will welcome that further review which 222 he says he is going to undertake, because obviously the danger of a fuel crisis is far greater than that of a military crisis? I hope that when the right hon. Gentleman makes the review he will let the manpower be available for the production of coal.
