HC Deb 19 November 1951 vol 494 c7
16. Mr. C. R. Hobson

asked the Minister of Transport if he is aware of the dangerous condition of the surface of the level crossing at Steeton, Yorkshire, where the road crosses the main Leeds—Carlisle railway; and if he will take action to procure the repair of the surface at the crossing.

Mr. Maclay

I am bringing the hon. Member's Question to the attention of the British Transport Commission, who will doubtless communicate with him.

Mr. Hobson

In view of the fact that the Minister possesses statutory powers in this regard, cannot he cause this road to be repaired, since there have already been several accidents?

Mr. Maclay

This section of road is within the property of the Railway Executive, and this is a matter primarily for the Railway Executive to deal with.

Mr. Hobson

Surely, the Minister has powers, in the interests of safety, not only of the trains passing over the crossing but also of the traffic 'passing over it, and will he not use these powers for the prevention of accidents? [HON. MEMBERS: "Answer!"] In view of the Minister's lack of forthrightness, I am reluctantly compelled to give notice that I shall raise this matter on the Adjournment.
