HC Deb 14 November 1951 vol 493 c978
49. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Minister of Food whether he is aware of the shortage of prunes, particularly for people who have digestive difficulties and are dependent on their use; and what steps are being taken to augment the supply.

Major Lloyd George

I am aware of the shortage, but the United States is the only important source of supply. I need not remind the hon. Member that dollars are scarce.

Mr. Freeman

Is it not a fact that the Government are not only unable to provide the necessary food supplies for this country but unable to supply what are in effect medical necessities as well?

Mr. G. R. Mitchison

Are there not prunes much nearer home?

Major Lloyd George

The United States is responsible for nearly the whole of the supply of this commodity.

Lieut.-Colonel Marcus Lipton

Will the Minister ask the Prime Minister to discuss this matter with President Truman when he is in America?
