§ 11. Mr. Alfred C. Bossomasked the First Lord of the Admiralty if he is aware of the injustice being done to officers who have voluntarily served in the Sea Cadet Corps for from six to nine years, by the failure to date on the part of the Government to provide them either with new uniforms or with the means to replace their original ones, which have now worn out; and if he will see if this situation can be remedied.
§ Mr. J. P. L. ThomasI would refer my hon. Friend to the answer given to him on 13th June, 1951. The first payment of£9, representing the accrued allowance of£3 a year, will be due on 1st April, 1952.
§ Mr. BossomWhat is the good of£9 when the cost of replacing an outworn uniform is over£30?
§ Mr. ThomasThe officers mentioned receive an initial uniform grant of£22, and will now receive£3 per annum upkeep allowance as from 1st April, 1949.
§ Mr. Percy ShurmerIs the First Lord aware that many of these officers are doing a jolly good job, but that they are not in a financial position to purchase a uniform at the present price?
§ Mr. ThomasI accept the tribute, with which the Admiralty wholeheartedly agree, that the hon. Gentleman has paid to these 958 officers. If there are very difficult cases, I promise to go into them most sympathetically.
