HC Deb 13 November 1951 vol 493 cc806-7
39. Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what arrangements are being made to ensure supplies of steel to complete the building of houses now in course of construction by local authorities.

Mr. H. Macmillan

As no doubt the hon. and gallant Member is aware, a system of steel allocation is to be introduced shortly. In the meantime, we shall do all we can to supply steel for housing and other essential needs.

Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

is the Minister aware that by "shortly" he no doubt means 4th February, which was the date given yesterday by the Minister of Supply? Is he further aware that in Lambeth. for example. five housing schemes are being held up through lack of steel and will have to wait until February?

Mr. Macmillan

I am well aware of that, and in the meantime we shall do all we can to supply steel.
