HC Deb 13 November 1951 vol 493 c790
8. Mr. Steward

asked the Secretary of State for War if he is aware that reservists returning from Korea often find that they are short of civilian clothing and other civilian necessities; and what action he will take to remove this hardship.

The Secretary of State for War (Mr. Antony Head)

Soldiers returning from Korea who go to the Reserve are either Regular soldiers serving on their original attestation, or reverting to the Reserve from which they have been recalled for this emergency. A Regular soldier going to the Reserve for the first time gets civilian clothing or a cash allowance. A soldier, who has been recalled from the Reserve for service in Korea, gets no further issue of clothing or clothing allowance on reversion to the Reserve. He cannot, however, have been called up for more than 18 months and would therefore be expected to have the civilian clothing which he used before his recall.

National Service men on release from full-time service do not receive civilian clothing or cash allowance.
