HC Deb 13 November 1951 vol 493 cc811-3

Gratuities to officers and men of all three Services have been introduced in recognition of the special services rendered in the full scale operations being undertaken by the United Nations' forces in Korea.

The qualification for the gratuity is the same as for the Korea Medal.* When men have so qualified they will be eligible for a minimum gratuity, the amount depending on rank, to cover the first three months' reckonable service. Thereafter they will be eligible for an additional amount for each completed month of further reckonable service as follows:

  1. (a) All service in or over Korea or Korean waters will count:
  2. 812
  3. (b) service in the same theatre under United Nations command not covered by (a) will also reckon provided the men have qualified for the Korea Medal and are held on the strength of a unit which is required to operate in or over Korea or Korean waters.

Service only in Japan will therefore not qualify for gratuity.

The scale of gratuity covering the first three months' reckonable service and the monthly additions thereafter are shown in the table below.

Examples are as follows:

A private will be eligible for £ 10 as soon as he has qualified and this will cover the first three months. If he has 12 months' total reckonable service in Korea he will get £19. If he does 18 months he will get £25.

A sergeant who qualifies will get £ 11 to cover the first three months; a total of £22 14s. for a year's service and £30 10s. for 18 months.

The figures for an Army lieutenant are £16, £37 3s., and £51 5s. respectively.

Corresponding ranks of the Navy and the R.A.F. will get the same amounts.

It is intended that the gratuities shall be tax-free.

Members of the women's Services who qualify will receive gratuities as shown in the table.

Payment of the gratuities will be made when men are posted away from the Korean theatre, or at the end of the scheme when the special circumstances held to warrant gratuities have ceased to exist.

The period of captivity of prisoners of war will reckon.

Where men have died who have qualified for gratuity, the sum due will be paid to the estate.

Royal Navy: 28 days afloat since 2nd July, 1950, inclusive in operations off the Korean coast, or one day or more on duty ashore in Korea since the same date.
