HC Deb 29 May 1951 vol 488 c4
7. Mr. Hamilton Kerr

asked the Minister of Works whether he will consider floodlighting the Cenotaph during the period of the Festival of Britain.

Mr. G. Brown

No, Sir. I do not think the floodlighting of this memorial would be generally acceptable.

Mr. Kerr

Would the Minister bear in mind that the Cenotaph in Whitehall commemorates the dead in two world wars? Does he not think that it ought to be floodlit?

Mr. Brown

That is exactly the point I have had in mind. I should have thought that it was a matter of taste and that on the whole most people would prefer that it should not be floodlit.
