HC Deb 20 March 1951 vol 485 cc2298-9
53. Mr. Gerald Williams

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what sum is being paid to the Kent County Council out of Exchequer funds for the present financial year.

Mr. Gaitskell

Information about final Exchequer payments for the current year is not yet available.

Mr. Williams

Is the Chancellor aware that every pound that the Exchequer spends means that Kent County Council have to spend a large sum of money, and that owing to Government extravagance their rates are being put up to an intolerable extent?

Mr. Gaitskell

That could equally be said the other way round: for every pound that the Kent County Council spend, the Government have to find an equivalent amount.
