HC Deb 15 March 1951 vol 485 c1733
1. Mr. J. Langford-Holt

asked the Minister of Health what schemes he has under consideration with a view to reducing the cost of the Health Service.

The Minister of Health (Mr. Marquand)

I have this matter under constant review, but I have no particular statement to make on it at the present time.

Mr. Langford-Holt

Would the right hon. Gentleman say why, a year ago, having taken power to do so, the Government did not proceed, after a Cabinet decision, with the prescription charge? Is he now actively considering plans which will effect economies without affecting the principle of the National Health Service?

Mr. Marquand

Many changes have been made, such as reduction in dentists' and opticians' fees and the cessation of payment of travelling expenses to patients. That kind of thing is always under review.
