HC Deb 08 March 1951 vol 485 cc863-4
The Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Geoffrey de Freitas)

I beg to move, That the Draft House of Commons (Redistribution of Seats) (No. 9) Order, 1951, a copy of which was laid before this House on 26th February, be approved. This Order in Council, and the one that follows on the Order Paper are needed because of the extension of the boundaries of the county boroughs of Bath and Plymouth. The Orders will, if approved, come into force in April, but will have no effect in any Parliamentary election until after the next General Election. Order No. 9 gives effect to the recommendations in the Report of the Boundaries Commission, which was laid before the House on 13th February last, with one exception. There is a change in the description of the North Somerset constituency because the Commissioners overlooked the fact that a parish had been divided into two parishes; and this Order gives effect to the intentions, although not the exact terms, of the Report.

Order No. 10 has no such complication, and gives effect to the recommendations of the Report.

Question put, and agreed to.

Resolved: That the Draft House of Commons (Redistribution of Seats) (No. 10) Order, 1951, a copy of which was laid before this House on 13th February, be approved.—[Mr. de Freitas.]
