HC Deb 05 March 1951 vol 485 cc31-2
52. Miss Irene Ward

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will make a statement on the progress made in the negotiations with Switzerland and Sweden to join the Atlantic Pact Nations in banning the export of war goods to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and other countries under Russian influence.

Mr. Younger

His Majesty's Government are continuously concerned to ensure, as far as possible, that their export control policy should not be frustrated by the actions of other governments. Talks with the Swedish and Swiss Governments are continuing, and have led to a useful examination of the problems on both sides.

Miss Ward

Am I right in assuming from that answer that the hon. Gentleman is seeking information and assistance from both the Swiss and the Swedish authorities to circumvent any wrongful action through people in this country sending exports to countries behind the Iron Curtain?

Mr. Younger

As I said, we want to ensure, as far as possible, that our own controls are not frustrated either in the way referred to, or in any other way, by what goes on in those other countries.
