HC Deb 25 July 1951 vol 491 c463
41. Mr. G. Cooper

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he proposes to publish the Davidson Report on the failure of the Mona Dam Reservoir Scheme in Jamaica.

Mr. Cook

The Report of the Committee has been received by the Government of Jamaica, which has authorised its release for local publication as soon as copies have been laid on the Table in the Jamaican Legislature.

Mr. Cooper

In view of the fact that this dam was initiated against local advice some eight years ago during the Governorship of Lord Milverton, and as it has turned out to be a complete failure, as it holds no water and has cost the taxpayers some £700,000, would it not be a good thing to look into this matter in the closest detail as it was a colonial scheme sponsored under a Tory Government?.

Mr. Cook

It is not intended to look at this in the Executive Council until a final report is received from Soil Mechanics, Ltd., who have been carrying out experiments.
