HC Deb 23 July 1951 vol 491 c4
5. Mr. Pryde

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power what steps he proposes to take to encourage the provision of social amenities in developing mining areas in Scotland.

Mr. P. Noel-Baker

I am well aware of the need for social amenities in the Scottish coalfields where production is expanding. The Scottish Divisional Miners' Welfare Committee have put forward proposals, which have been carefully examined by the National Miners' Welfare Joint Council, the body which coordinates the welfare requirements of the mining industry. The Divisional Welfare Committee is pursuing its plans, in close consultation with the Scottish Home Department, and with the local education and other authorities.

Mr. Pryde

Will my right hon. Friend take note of the fact that Gorebridge, Dalkeith and Newtongrange, which is a development area, are receiving miners from Lanarkshire?

Mr. Noel-Baker

Yes, Sir.
