HC Deb 23 January 1951 vol 483 c8
14. Sir Herbert Williams

asked the Secretary of State for War what is the present divisional strength of the British Army.

Mr. Strachey

I would refer the hon. Member to the statement made by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister on 12th September last.

Sir H. Williams

My Question relates to now and not to the situation last September, so may I have an answer with regard to the present situation?

Mr. Strachey

If the hon. Member will look at the Prime Minister's statement, he will see that it relates to the aim of the present rearmament programme, and for security reasons I cannot go further than that.

Sir H. Williams

As I understand that security reasons did not make it impossible to say a few months ago that it was the equivalent of six and a half divisions, why cannot we be told now whether there is any change?

Mr. Strachey

The Prime Minister said that we were to have 10 Regular divisions and 12 Territorial divisions.
