HC Deb 28 February 1951 vol 484 cc2059-60
8. Mr. Geoffrey Cooper

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many museums there are in Nigeria; in how many the historical treasures of Nigeria are on view; and when it is proposed to commence the building of a museum in Nigeria, especially for displaying the Benin treasures and antiquities.

Mr. J. Griffiths

I have asked the Governor for information and will write to my hon. Friend when I have his reply.

Mr. Cooper

Does my right hon. Friend realise that some of these treasures are stored in most unsuitable conditions and that some of them have been obtained by other nations and will be returned, provided that suitable accommodation for their preservation and display is provided? Will he do something to expedite this matter?

Mr. Griffiths

I will give consideration to it when I have received a reply from the Governor.
