HC Deb 26 February 1951 vol 484 c1731
22. Mr. Percy Wells

asked the Minister of Food whether he will now raise the minimum fruit content in jam.

Mr. Webb

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given to the hon. and gallant Member for Angus, South (Captain Duncan) on 12th February.

Mr. Wells

Does my right hon. Friend not agree that a higher fruit content would save sugar and produce a better jam?

Mr. Webb

If the public want jam with more fruit in it, and are prepared to pay higher prices for it, there is nothing in the Ministry's orders to prevent makers of jam providing that jam; they can go ahead and do it. If there is public demand for it, I hope an enterprising jam maker will go ahead and meet that demand.

Squadron Leader Burden

Is it not obvious that in everything they do, the present Government are getting in more and more of a jam?

Mr. Harrison

On a point of order. Is my right hon. Friend forced seriously to reply to the continuous gibes from the Opposition?

Mr. Speaker

That is not a point of order.
