HC Deb 05 December 1951 vol 494 cc2358-9
3. Mr. George Chetwynd

asked the Minister of Civil Aviation whether he has yet agreed to the establishment of an airport on Tees-side; whether British European Airways intend to provide a regular service; and whether use will be made of helicopters for short-range communication between London and Tees-side.

Mr. Maclay

The municipal aerodrome at West Hartlepool serves Tees-side. I am informed that the British European Airways Corporation has undertaken to make, with the help of local representatives, a joint survey of the air service requirements of the North-Eastern area including Tees-side. With regard to the last part of the Question no plans can be made for inter-city services between London and Tees-side until the development of a twin-engined helicopter is further advanced.

Mr. Chetwynd

Can the hon. Gentleman say when this survey will be started?

Mr. Maclay

I cannot give an exact date for that yet.
