HC Deb 04 December 1951 vol 494 c2198
6. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the progress of the work of the Scottish Advisory Council on Education in relation to Scottish libraries.

Mr. J. Stuart

The Council submitted their Report on Libraries, Museums and Art Galleries in December, 1950, and it was published as a Command Paper in May of this year. Interested bodies have been invited to submit their views on the recommendations in the Report, which raises a number of important questions, and I shall consider the recommendations in the light of the representations I receive.

Mr. Hughes

Would the Secretary of State say whether it is his intention to extend the library system of Scotland—a thing much desired by the people—and, if so, what are his plans for this purpose?

Mr. Stuart

I am not in a position to state any plans. As I said, I should like first to consider the recommendations.
