HC Deb 19 April 1951 vol 486 cc2004-5
53. Major Legge-Bourke

asked the Minister of Agriculture what acreage of sugar beet had been sown at the latest convenient date; and how this compares with the average over the last five years.

Mr. T. Williams

The British Sugar Corporation estimate that on 14th April, 1951, some 12,500 acres had been planted. Normally, sowings by that date exceed 250,000 acres. In 1947, however, the weather conditions during the spring were very unfavourable as they are this year, and the acreage sown by mid-April probably did not much exceed the 1951 figure; nevertheless, the acreage finally sown in 1947 was 395,000 acres.
