HC Deb 12 April 1951 vol 486 c1182
39. Sir Waldron Smithers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has considered information which has been sent him by the Western Kent Sunday School Union concerning the obscenity of many postcards now on sale and the consequent ill effects on the minds of young people; and what steps he proposes to take to deal with this matter.

Mr. Ede

The law provides for the confiscation and destruction of obscene postcards which are exposed for sale, and for the punishment of publishers and vendors. With regard to the representations by the Western Kent Sunday School Union which were forwarded to me by the hon. Member and two other hon. Members, I have asked the Secretary of the Union to forward specimens of the cards of which complaint is made so that I may consider whether any action is called for on my part.

Sir W. Smithers

Who decides whether the postcards are obscene or not?

Mr. Ede

In the end, the magistrate before whom the case is tried.
