HC Deb 12 April 1951 vol 486 cc1189-90
64. Air Commodore Harvey

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what regulations and arrangements he proposes to make to deal with the parking of motor cars and other vehicles in the streets of the area surrounding the Festival Gardens.

Mr. Ede

I am informed by the Commissioner of Police that parking accommodation for about 600 cars will be available inside Battersea Park, alongside the South Carriage Drive, and that a further 1,150 cars can be parked at bombed sites in Ethelburgha Street and Thessaly Road, Battersea. A park for coaches will be established at Clapham Common whence passengers will be able to complete their journey by a special service of buses. Waiting restrictions on similar lines to those in existing "yellow band" streets will be put into force as found necessary by the police in an area around Battersea Park and also in certain of the more important roads North of the river.

Air Commodore Harvey

May I declare my interest as a resident of Chelsea in asking the Home Secretary for an assurance that the streets in Battersea and Chelsea will be kept clear, so that we do not have six months of conditions such as obtained at the Chelsea Flower Show?

Mr. Ede

The hon. and gallant Gentleman will have an opportunity of studying my reply and if he has any representation to make on it, I shall be very willing to see him and discuss it.
