HC Deb 11 April 1951 vol 486 cc1017-8
48. Air Commodore Harvey

asked the Minister of Defence if he will arrange for a travelling board to visit colonial territories for the purpose of examining and attesting men desirous of joining the Fighting Services.

The Minister of Defence (Mr. Shinwell)

I am looking into the hon. and gallant Member's suggestion in conjunction with my Service colleagues.

Air Commodore Harvey

Is the right hon. Gentleman anxious that these men should join our Forces? If so, would he give them every consideration from that point of view?

Mr. Shinwell

I am attracted by the suggestion of the hon. and gallant Member and I am looking into it.

Commander Noble

Is the Minister aware that if he does not carry out the suggestion would-be recruits who have travelled all the way to this country may not even be recruited?

Mr. Shinwell

I have not said that I am not going to do it.

Mr. Paget

Is the Minister aware there are some 10,000 trained personnel in Jamaica most anxious to join, and will he do something about it?

Mr. Shinwell

I will certainly look into it.
