HC Deb 18 October 1950 vol 478 c2030
22. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has yet received any replies from colonial Governments in response to his dispatch asking them to adopt humane methods of slaughter of animals; and what further action is proposed in the matter.

Mr. J. Griffiths

Replies have been received from a number of Colonies. In the majority of these humane methods of slaughter have already been adopted, but for religious reasons the use of mechanical instruments for stunning is not acceptable to all communities. When I have received all replies I will consider whether there is any further action I can usefully take. It is already clear that colonial Governments are continuously concerned to prevent any form of cruelty to animals.
