asked the Minister of Food what was the number of civic restaurants operating in January. 1946; and at the latest available date.

Mr. Webb

There were 1,373 civic restaurants in January, 1946, and 427 on 15th August, 1950, which is the latest available date.

In view of the increasing success of private enterprise in this matter, would the Minister consider extending the principle to his own Department and closing some of his bulk purchase sections?

Mr. Webb

I do not quite see what that question has to do with civic restaurants. It is a matter for each local authority to decide. If they find any consumer-need for these restaurants I am anxious to help them all I can.
