HC Deb 21 November 1950 vol 481 c203
56. Mr. Henderson Stewart

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on the progress of the National Savings Movement.

Mr. Gaitskell

There are some 185,000 National Savings groups at work with a membership of about 7,000,000. The amount of small savings invested is now just over £6,100 million. In particular the Trustee Savings Banks are this week celebrating the fact that their funds have now reached £1,000 million. I am sure the House will wish to join me in congratulating them on this fine achievement.

Mr. Henderson Stewart

While thanking the right hon. Gentleman for his tribute to the trustee savings movement, may we have an assurance, which I think we should have from him, that he and his Department will do everything they can to advance this splendid movement?

Mr. Gaitskell

Most certainly.
