§ 56. Mr. Henderson Stewartasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on the progress of the National Savings Movement.
§ Mr. GaitskellThere are some 185,000 National Savings groups at work with a membership of about 7,000,000. The amount of small savings invested is now just over £6,100 million. In particular the Trustee Savings Banks are this week celebrating the fact that their funds have now reached £1,000 million. I am sure the House will wish to join me in congratulating them on this fine achievement.
§ Mr. Henderson StewartWhile thanking the right hon. Gentleman for his tribute to the trustee savings movement, may we have an assurance, which I think we should have from him, that he and his Department will do everything they can to advance this splendid movement?
§ Mr. GaitskellMost certainly.
