HC Deb 24 May 1950 vol 475 c2042
18. Mr. Peter Smithers

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps he proposes to take to implement the recommendations of the Evans Report regarding European settlement in British Honduras.

Mr. Dugdale

An officer is being appointed to investigate further the establishment of dairy farming in the Cayo District, which the Evans Commission considered was the only possibility for European settlement.

Mr. Smithers

In view of the suggestion in paragraph 218 of the Report that that area is specially suited for Mediterranean settlement, has the possibility of settling people who wish to emigrate from Malta been considered? I appreciate that there may be difficulties, but I believe that there is great pressure in Malta.

Mr. Dugdale

We shall certainly bear that point in mind, but the Evans Commission have said that settlement would have to be undertaken gradually and with caution.
