HC Deb 24 May 1950 vol 475 cc2043-4
19. Mr. Peter Smithers

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps have been taken to remedy the grave deficiency in Forest Department staff, referred to in paragraph 1 of the Forest Report for the Colony of British Guiana for 1948.

Mr. Dugdale

The deficiency was made good by the appointment of three assistant conservators of forests in September, 1948, January, 1949, and September, 1949, respectively.

Mr. Smithers

Does the right hon. Gentleman think that the appointment of three assistant conservators is adequate, in view of the fact that the 1948 Report says that the whole of the work of the Department was paralysed owing to failure to fill staff vacancies? Will the 1949 Report, when published, disclose a more satisfactory state of affairs?

Mr. Dugdale

Yes, Sir, I am told that it, will.
