51. Charles Ian Orr-Ewingasked the Minister of Defence what security plans are being made amongst the Atlantic Powers to regulate the release of information on equipment being supplied to our Defence Forces and those of Allied nations.
§ Mr. ShinwellComprehensive security plans have been worked out for safeguarding North Atlantic Treaty Organisation information within the Organisation itself and for regulating the release by member countries of information about the work being done. Each member country continues to retain responsibility, however, for its own security policy and, unless equipment has been provided subject to special security restrictions, for the release of information about any equipment which it has received.
Mr. Orr-EwingAfter the concern that we on this side have felt about the Canberra bomber, ought there not to be a tightening up of our own defensive security measures with regard to the equipment which we shall provide, not only for our own Forces but for those of Western Union?
§ Mr. ShinwellAs I say, the security arrangements are in the hands of the nationals concerned. As far as we are concerned, we take every possible precaution.
