HC Deb 22 May 1950 vol 475 cc1625-6
8. Sir William Darling

asked the Minister of Food how many food offices there are in Scotland; what is the number of staff employed; and what is the cost, per head of population of Scotland, for their services.

Mr. F. Willey

There are 135 local food offices in Scotland; excluding the casual staff taken on for a few weeks to help with the issue of ration books, 2,080 staff were employed in these offices on 1st May and we estimate the cost of their services as about 2s. 4d. per head of population a year In addition, the chief food office for Scotland employs 201 staff at an estimated cost of about 5d. per head of population.

Sir W. Darling

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that what Scotland is now paying 2s. 9d. a head of the population for was formerly satisfactorily discharged without any cost to the Crown?

Mr. Willey

We regard this as a fair cost to ensure fair shares.
