§ 48. Captain Ryderasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what arrangement or agreement exists for the upkeep of British cemeteries in Burma.
§ Mr. YoungerNo general arrangement has as yet been made for the upkeep of British cemeteries in Burma, other than those maintained by the Imperial War Graves Commission. A central committee has been set up in Rangoon to consider the best means of dealing with the problem.
§ Captain RyderWill the hon. Gentleman bear in mind that it has been represented to me that these cemeteries are in a deplorable condition? Will he communicate that to the Commission which is investigating them?
§ Mr. YoungerI think it is correct, unfortunately, that some of these cemeteries are in a bad condition. The hon. and gallant Gentleman will appreciate that conditions generally in the country have made it extremely difficult to look after all the cemeteries.
